Mattew Garett said in reply to a request from Marc Shuttleworth on the devel list that he is adding xgl to gdm, so that we can chose which server we want to start. Some of his work is already available now: if xgl is installed, try to switch users (system -> logout) and you will see that you get a windows with a choice to start the new session with xgl or the standart X.
