The Ubuntu team is proud to announce the Beta Release of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS -
codenamed "Dapper Drake". The Beta Release introduces the new Desktop CD, which can be used both to try Ubuntu "live" and to install the system. Ubuntu is a Linux distribution for your desktop or server, with a fast and easy install, regular releases, a tight selection of excellent packages installed by default, every other package you can imagine available from the network, and professional technical support from Canonical Ltd and hundreds of other companies around the world. Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (long-term support) will be the first Ubuntu release to be supported for three years on the desktop, and five years on the server. To Get Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Beta --------------------------- Download Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Beta here (choose the mirror closest to you): United States: http://us.releases.ubuntu.com/releases/6.06/ Europe: http://se.releases.ubuntu.com/6.06/ United Kingdom: http://releases.ubuntu.com/6.06/ Rest of the World: http://releases.ubuntu.com/6.06/ Please download using Bittorrent if possible. To upgrade from Ubuntu 5.10 to Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Beta, follow these instructions: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DapperUpgrades The final version of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS is expected to be released in June. At that time, we will mail pressed Desktop CDs free of charge. About Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Beta -------------------------- To see it all, you'll need to try the CD, but the highlights include: On the Desktop * A new graphical installer is available on the live CD, allowing Ubuntu to be installed quickly and easily to your hard disk * Faster system startup and login * Simplified menu organization * Graphical shutdown process * Easy access to power management settings with GNOME Power Manager * Improved support for video playback * Optional NetworkManager for convenient roaming between different wireless and wired networks * It is now possible to enable accessibility options from the very first boot screen of the live CD, and thereby use the accessibility features of Ubuntu during installation * GNOME 2.14.1 * OpenOffice.org 2.0.2 * X.org 7.0 On the Server * New kernels targeted at server platforms. The server kernels are tuned differently than the desktop kernels (providing better performance for server applications). The "server" kernel is generic, and should work on the same equipment that the desktop kernel does. The "bigiron" server kernel is geared towards systems with greater than 8 CPUs (ES7000/Summit/BIGSMP). * Turn-key LAMP installation * Improved support for clusters and SANs * Numerous thin client enhancements, including faster client startup, graphical boot process, reduced memory requirements, and sound device support Localization * Automatic setup of non-Latin input methods * Menu item translations can now be included in language packs, for faster integration of new and updated translations Installation and Upgrades * The text-mode installer now runs in a single stage, rebooting straight into the complete system. This makes it faster, simpler, and more reliable. * Ubuntu can now be installed to USB devices, such as removable hard drives and flash memory, using the text-mode installer * A new upgrade tool is available, for simple, clean and reliable upgrades from one Ubuntu release to the next, starting with Ubuntu 5.10 "Under the hood" * GCC 4.0.3 * glibc 2.3.6 * Linux 2.6.15.6 * New live CD infrastructure for improved performance, usability and space-efficiency * Greatly improved infrastructure for automatic hardware detection and * activation * The system PATH is now set in exactly one place, /etc/environment, for convenient administration As always, Ubuntu includes the very best of the 100% Free / Libre application software world, and each new release incorporates countless new features and bugfixes from the global development community. Feedback and Helping -------------------- If you would like to help shape Ubuntu, take a look at the list of ways you can participate at http://www.ubuntu.com/community/participate/ Your comments, bug reports, patches and suggestions will help turn this Beta into the best release of Ubuntu ever. The Porting Team is proud to announce to the Ubuntu world the Beta release of
Ubuntu 6.06 LTS codename "Dapper Drake" and Ubuntu Server 6.06 LTS for UltraSparc, IA64 and HPPA (1.1 and later) CPUs. What's hot and new - ------------------ For the second time the Porting Team is releasing together with Ubuntu mainstream (https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2005-October/000040.html). This is the proof that our ports are getting better and more stable in time specially thanks to our amazing growing community, On top of what Ubuntu mainstream already has, a number of architecture specific improvements have been done from the previous release: * new amazingly fast build machines have been donated by Canonical and hosted at the official data center. * HPPA did overrule all the other 5 architectures for being the most up-to-date in the archive. * a lot of work has been done on the sparc kernel that now has preliminary support for SUN Niagara T1 CPU (as previously announced). * mono has been ported to sparc, bringing the sparc desktop experience almost at the same level as other architectures. * a lot of sparc installer bug fixes made their way to the archive. Including also installation on RAID and LVM. * and much more under the hood. How to get Ports - ---------------- Download Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Beta here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/6.06/beta/ or the Ubuntu Server 6.06 LTS Beta here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/ports/releases/dapper/beta/ Net install images are available here: UltraSparc: http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/dists/dapper/main/installer-sparc/current/images/ HPPA: http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/dists/dapper/main/installer-hppa/current/images/ IA64: http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/dists/dapper/main/installer-ia64/current/images/ Known Issues - ------------ Due to a very unfortunate bug, the HPPA CD images will not be able to complete the install. It is highly recommended to use net install that is known to work fine. Feedback and Helping - -------------------- If you would like to help shape Ubuntu, take a look at the list of ways you can participate at http://www.ubuntu.com/community/participate/ Your comments, bug reports, patches and suggestions will help ensure that our next release is the best release of Ubuntu ever. Please report bugs through Launchpad: http://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bugs If you have a question, or if you think you may have found a bug but aren't sure, first try asking on the #ubuntu IRC channel on Freenode, on the Ubuntu Users mailing list, or on the Ubuntu forums: http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-users http://www.ubuntuforums.org/ For specific Ports involvement and development you are welcome to join the #ubuntu-ports IRC channel on Freenode.

The Edubuntu team is happy to announce the release of Edubuntu 6.06 LTS
Beta. Aside from the usual install CDs for all architectures, this release includes the Edubuntu live CD that comes with a new live installer to install the Edubuntu Workstation flavour directly to the disk. Edubuntu is a classroom distribution, shipping with a selection of educational applications and built around LTSP the linux terminal server project. Edubuntu aims for an as easy-as-possible installation of an LTSP setup, but also comes with a workstation flavour for home usage. The Edubuntu 6.06 LTS (long term support) release comes with 3 Year support on the desktop and 5 year support on the server. == Downloading Edubuntu 6.06 LTS Beta == To download Edubuntu 6.06 LTS Beta, use one of the following URLs, please use bittorrent if possible: * United States: http://us.releases.ubuntu.com/edubuntu/6.06/ * Europe: http://se.releases.ubuntu.com/edubuntu/6.06/ * United Kingdom: http://releases.ubuntu.com/edubuntu/6.06/ * Rest of the World: http://releases.ubuntu.com/edubuntu/6.06/ The final release of Edubuntu 6.06 LTS Beta will be released on June 1st, at which time you will be able to order pressed install CDs free of charge. == Whats New ? == * Edubuntu ships three themes by default in its -artwork package now, with a simple dpkg-reconfigure edubuntu-artwork you are able to select the systemwide default look. The choices are Junior (6-10 age group), Senior (10-16 age group) *default* and Plain (less graphic rich). * Themed graphical login manager for the LTSP clients. * Support for multiple architectures for the LTSP clients (It is now possible to build the client chroot on AMD64 systems for i386 clients by running sudo ltsp-build-client --arch i386 post install). * The first Edubuntu live CD is now available (it contains all of the Edubuntu workstation install and is available for all 3 supported architectures). * Support for the PowerPC architecture was added * LTSP now finally supports the X_COLOR_DEPTH variable to force the usage of 16Bit on the clients through lts.conf. * By default we now install only the linux-image package in the client chroot, the excessive memory usage of the restricted modules package is gone * A special netboot mode was introduced to initramfs so only network device drivers are loaded, this reduces the size to two thirds of a normal initramfs and speeds up the bootprocess * LTSP now understands the X_MOUSE_DEVICE and X_MOUSE_PROTOCOL in lts.conf options and adds support for various serial devices including touchscreens and serial tablets. * 3 button emulation of 2 button mice is now supported as well. * The bootprocess has seen a lot of speed improvements * Startup links in rcS.d and rc2.d are now started based on whitelists (RC2_WHITELIST RCS_WHITELIST), only the bare minimum of processes is started on the thin clients * this results in a shorter boottime. * Usplash was included and enabled by default on thin clients - Many patches were merged from the debian team to make the packages work on debian as well. * There is optional Sound support on the thin clients now. * The ltsp-build-client script now has options to manually enable extra and security mirrors during chroot creation. * The default mirror of ltsp-build-client points to archive.ubuntu.com now. == Feedback and Helping == If you want to help us developing, documenting and improving edubuntu, have a look at: * https://wiki.edubuntu.org/EdubuntuCommunity == More Information from online ressources == For more information see the edubuntu website, wiki and mailing list: * https://www.edubuntu.org * https://wiki.edubuntu.org * https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/edubuntu-devel
